Updated statistics on preventable hospitalizations from the Office of Statewide Health Planning & Development (OSHPD) are now available on RACECOUNTS.org. From the years 2016-18, these estimates include hospitalizations for diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, heart failure, angina and asthma. See PQI #92 here for details. Preventable hospitalizations serve as a measure for quality of care. These hospital admissions may have been avoided with timely, effective, and more cost-effective primary care.

Performance: OSHPD reported 676.2 preventable hospitalizations statewide between 2016 and 2018. Mono and Marin counties had the lowest preventable hospitalization rates among counties, and Glenn and Butte counties had the highest preventable hospitalization rates.

Disparity: Statewide, the Non-Latinx Asian / Pacific Islander racial group had the lowest preventable hospitalization rate and the Non-Latinx Black racial group had the highest preventable hospitalization rate. Lassen and San Francisco had the most racially disparate preventable hospitalization outcomes among counties.

Impact: OSHPD reported 615,641 preventable hospitalizations statewide between 2016 and 2018. Non-Latinx Whites numerically had the most preventable hospitalizations with 285,275 of them, 46% of the all preventable hospitalizations.
